« I am a Black revolutionary woman, and because of this i have been charged with and accused of every alleged crime in which a woman was believed to have participated. The alleged crimes in which only men were supposedly involved, i have been accused of planning. They have plastered pictures alleged to be me in post offices, airports, hotels, police cars, subways, banks, television, and newspapers. They have offered over fifty thousand dollars in rewards for my capture and they have issued orders to shoot on sight and shoot to kill. »

Gloria Rolando est une cinéaste afro-cubaine actuelle importante. Elle se revendique notamment beaucoup de la cinéaste (afro-cubaine) Sara Gomez (évoquée ICI sur le blog), pour laquelle elle aurait voulu réaliser un documentaire (encore en projet ?). Elle dit : « I think Sara lives not only in the works she made but also in many intellectuals who had the opportunity to know her well, to share ideas and the miracles of life. I do not pretend to make a her biography, but to seek out this spirituality through those who tasted of her friendship. I am interested in those moments which defined her as a moviemaker and a woman of her time. »
Gloria Rolando explore entre autres la culture africaine à Cuba. Ainsi par exemple son film Oggun,an eternal presence qui commence avec une mise en scène d’un « patakin », un mythe Yoruba du dieu Oggun et la déesse Ochun. Elle y interview Lazaro Ros, fameux chanteur Yoruba Cubain, et incorpore les scenes d’un « toque » (ceremonie Yoruba) à la Havane avec des membres du Conjunto Folklorico Nacional. Le mythe Yoruba est présent aussi dans Eyes of the rainbow.

Eyes of the rainbow (« Les Yeux de l’Arc-En-Ciel ») porte sur Assata Shakur, ancien membre des Pantères Noires et chef du BLA (Black Liberation Army) qui vit à la Havane : sa vie, ses rencontres avec les cultures Africaines de Cuba. Assata a été capturée en 1973 apres avoir été blessée dans le dos. Elle s’est enfuie de prison en 1979 et elle est le sujet d’une controverse dans l’état de New Jersey, ou ils demandent son extradition de Cuba.

« In the struggle of the African American people, many women’s voices in the past and the present have always called for social justice, women who throughout the years have shown integrity and firmness in their principles. For this reason, « The Eyes of the Rainbow » is dedicated to all women who struggle for a better world.
One of those voices that already forms a part of the history of the African American people is that of Assata Shakur. In the documentary « The Eyes of the Rainbow, » she recounts aspects of her path as relentless warrior. We are able to create a meeting with Assata Shakur through the symbols of AfroCuban culture, which offer us beautiful songs evoking the ancestors.
Representations of the Yoruba warrior orishas such as Oya and Ochosi support the discourse of this story, which also has its moments of poetry and tenderness as in the dance of Oshun, through which is illustrated Assata’s decision to become mother while still in prison.
The blues interpreted by Junius Williams and his « Magic Harp, » the songs of Sweet Honey in the Rocks, and the Cuban group « Vocal Baobab » give a special stamp to this valiant testimony which defines the spirit of struggle in the African American woman. »
Gloria Rolando est une cinéaste cubaine contemporaine incontournable, et très pertinente du point de vue de la mémoire, culture et histoire africaines. Elle a notamment contribué à la création d’un collectif cubain indépendant, Images of Caribbean, où se développent des projets filmiques autour des racines Africaines à Cuba.
